Wedge-tailed shearwater banding and falloutFallout is the act of seabirds becoming disoriented by artificial lights and falling to the ground when they first emerge from their nests to fly to sea to forage. Seabirds that fallout are often struck by cars, predated by invasive mammals, or die due to impact or dehydration if they are not protected or recovered quickly. To determine source nesting colonies, and which nesting colonies are most impacted by artificial lights, we attach steel bands with individual number combinations to many Wedge-tailed Shearwaters. This year I organized seven banding events across O'ahu which resulted in over 30 volunteers assisting in banding 1,273 Wedge-tailed Shearwaters.
